Graphic Era University was established in 1993 and is located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. It was initially started as the 'Graphic Era Institute of Technology' to offer undergraduate programs in core engineering and allied sciences. Graphic Era has been awarded the coveted Regularized Status of a Deemed to be University on June 8, 2018, from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, that added to its status as a quality-driven university that aims to provide a good quality higher education to the learners everywhere, including those who are located in rural or educationally backward areas. Graphic Era Deemed to be University is a globally recognized, technological-driven, ethically engaged diverse community whose members work in harmony and collaboration towards a positive transformation around the globe, through mentoring, research and social action.

It also offers student exchange and knowledge sharing programs for its students with quite a lot of internationally acclaimed universities and also has been honoured at international forums for its excellence and consistency in keeping up the highest standards of education. This University placed itself as the only one of the State to be recognized as one among the top 100 Universities of India, as an educational institution of knowledge and excellence, crossing all dimensions of tests like mentorship, teaching, exposure, learning, research, graduation outcome, outreach, industrial presence and more for Indian Institutions of higher education. The University runs on the motive and mission to promote expert quality learning and offering knowledge and skills to succeed in their respective roles.

To expand this education to more and more students, it established the Graphic Era Directorate of Distance and Online Education, the main motive of which is to provide the enrolled students with tremendous knowledge, hands-on skills and exceptional learning experiences, through internet-based interactive online classes for an e-learning experience. The prime motive is to offer a constant flow of a learning experience and improvement, simplicity, integrity, ethics. The teaching is focused on building their aptitude to become industry experts in their fields and can do full justice to their respective roles. The open learning distance framework is exceptional with industry-relevant lectures and instructional material, along with advanced resources to reach out to students from all backgrounds.
